Bulgarian is the official language of the Republic of Bulgaria. It is also spoken in Canada, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Moldova, Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States, with an estimated total of 12 million native speakers.

Some linguists, including almost all Bulgarian and Greek ones, are of the opinion that the Macedonian language is only a regional norm of Bulgarian.
